Introduction Riotuss Syrup is a medicine used to treat dry cough. It works by suppressing the cough reflex in the brain. It also thins the mucus and makes it easier to cough out. Additionally, it relieves allergy symptoms like watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and throat irritation. Riotuss Syrup is taken with or without food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your doctor know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine. The most common side effects are nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, loss of appetite, headache, insomnia, rash, and itching. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects. This medicine can also cause sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can make sleepiness worse. Never support self-medication or recommend your medicine to another person. It is beneficial to have plenty of fluids while taking this medication. Before you start taking this medicine it is important to inform your doctor if you are suffering from any lung, liver or kidney disease. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Riotuss Syrup may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time. How Riotuss Syrup works Riotuss Syrup is a combination of four medicines: Dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, phenylephrine, and chlorpheniramine which relieve dry cough. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that relieves cough by reducing the activity of cough centre in the brain. Guaifenesin is an expectorant which decreases the stickiness of mucus (phlegm) and helps in its removal from the airways. Phenylephrine is a decongestant which narrows the small blood vessels providing relief from congestion or stuffiness in the nose. Chlorpheniramine is an antiallergic which relieves allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. Breastfeeding SAFE IF PRESCRIBED Riotuss Syrup is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. Larger doses or prolonged use of Riotuss Syrup may cause sleepiness and other effects in the baby Driving UNSAFE Riotuss Syrup may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive. Kidney SAFE IF PRESCRIBED Riotuss Syrup is probably safe to use in patients with kidney disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of Riotuss Syrup may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor. Use of Riotuss Syrup may cause excessive sleepiness in patients with end stage kidney disease. Liver UNSAFE Riotuss Syrup is probably unsafe to use in patients with liver disease and should be avoided. Please consult your doctor.
